SmartScan Self-Checkout

Summary ↴
SmartScan is an innovative redesign of Woolworths’ self-service checkout system, developed to improve user experience by addressing common frustrations such as system delays, poor error feedback, and lack of inclusivity. By integrating RFID technology, AI-powered produce recognition, and a modular dual-basket design, SmartScan significantly reduces checkout time while enhancing accuracy and accessibility for all customers. This project was developed as part of UNSW’s DDES9151 Interaction Design Foundations course, blending real user research, usability testing, and human-centred design principles to deliver a working touchscreen UI prototype and foam board physical model.

Design Problems Identified:

  • Outdated interface design
  • Slow response time and frequent pop-ups
  • Lack of clear instructions for produce scanning
  • No undo or back function
  • High dependency on staff for resolving issues

Research Methods:

  • Personas (including real and fictional users)
  • Think-aloud protocol
  • Usability testing with real-world users

Design Solution – SmartScan Checkout System:

  • Dual Basket System: One for produce (green) and one for non-produce (blue)
  • RFID Bulk Scanning: Instantly scans all tagged non-produce items in one action
  • Integrated Produce Scale: Weighs items as they are added
  • AI Produce Recognition: Identifies fruits/vegetables visually
  • Interactive Touchscreen UI: Clear navigation, accessibility options, and Everyday Rewards integration
  • Bagging Feedback: SmartScan detects bagging and offers visual/audio guidance
  • Multilingual Help and Tutorials: Integrated into touchscreen UI for inclusivity
  • Motion Graphics & Animations: Optional onboarding animation for first-time users

Outcome:

SmartScan not only improves efficiency and accuracy but also creates a more inclusive and intuitive checkout process. The project culminated in a foam board prototype, interactive UI design for iPad, and a full user flow animation to simulate real-world use.
